Embracing Pura Vida and the Power of Self-Love

Embracing Pura Vida and the Power of Self-Love

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it's easy to forget what really matters. We often get caught up in the pursuit of success, money, and power, pushing ourselves harder and harder to meet external expectations. But what if there was a way to step back, slow down, and truly appreciate the present moment? That's exactly what I discovered during a life-changing trip to Costa Rica during my junior year of college, and it's a lesson I carry with me every day.

I traveled to Costa Rica with a class called "The Way of Living," and little did I know how transformative this experience would be. From the moment we arrived, the pace of life felt different–a stark contrast to the constant rush I was used to. The essence of Costa Rica's culture is encapsulated in one powerful phrase: Pura Vida. This simple yet profound expression means "pure life," but it's more than just a saying–it's a way of life. It's about living with intention, appreciating what's around you, and finding happiness in the present.

Sunrise Yoga: A New Kind of Wake-Up Call

Our mornings in Costa Rica began early, with sunrise yoga sessions that felt like a grounding ritual. There was something magical about greeting the day with a calm and centered mind, surrounded by nature. The sun rising over the ocean, the sound of the macaws squawking in the distance, and the feeling of stretching into the new day–it was the perfect way to start each morning.

Yoga wasn't just a physical practice during this trip; it became a way to connect with myself on a deeper level. I began to realize that slowing down and taking time for mindful movement was essential for my mental and emotional well-being. It wasn't about perfecting poses or pushing myself too hard–it was about being present, breathing deeply, and honoring my body.

Whole Foods: Nourishing Mind, Body, and Soul

After yoga, we'd enjoy nourishing breakfasts of whole foods, a practice that reminded me of how powerful food can be. Fresh fruit, nutrient-dense smoothies, and wholesome meals were staples during our stay, and I could immediately feel the difference in how my body responded. Eating with intention–focusing on what nourishes you–was a game-changer. I learned that the fuel we give our bodies impacts not only our physical health but also our mental and emotional clarity.

In Costa Rica, food wasn't just sustenance; it was a way of connecting with the earth and the present moment. I started to understand the importance of being mindful of what I consumed and how I could fuel my body with foods that made me feel vibrant, energized, and grounded.

Surfing: Riding the Waves of Life

Surfing was another unexpected way that Costa Rica taught me about self-love. There was something humbling about being in the ocean–vulnerable, yet empowered, as I learned to ride the waves. Every wave was a challenge, but each time I paddled out, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Surfing wasn't about being perfect–it was about learning to fall, getting back up, and staying present with the experience.

This was the first time I fully understood how to embrace the process, not just the end result. The ocean has a way of reminding you that life isn't always about achieving something–sometimes, it's about being in the moment and letting go of control.

Meditation: Finding Clarity in the Present

Meditation became another essential practice during our trip. In Costa Rica, we made time every day to sit in silence, allowing our thoughts to settle and our minds to rest. At first, it felt challenging to sit still, but the more I practiced, the more I began to appreciate the stillness. Meditation gave me clarity, helped me let go of stress, and reminded me to be mindful of my thoughts and feelings. It became a tool for quieting the noise in my head and reconnecting with my true self.

The Costa Rican Way: Family and Happiness Over Careers and Money

What struck me most during my time in Costa Rica was the way the culture valued family, personal happiness, and living with intention. Unlike the fast-paced, career-driven world I was used to, Costa Rica's focus was on nurturing relationships, enjoying life's simple pleasures, and fostering a deep sense of community.

In Costa Rica, it wasn't about how much you earned or how many accolades you collected–it was about how you lived, how you treated others, and how you cared for your own well-being. Family came first, personal happiness was a priority, and the concept of work-life balance was deeply ingrained in the culture.

This mindset was a revelation. It reminded me that, in the end, the most important things aren't material accomplishments–they're the connections we make and the way we take care of ourselves. Self-love, peace, and presence are the true markers of a fulfilled life.

Living the Pura Vida: Bringing It Back Home

Since returning from Costa Rica, I've tried to carry Pura Vida with me in everything I do. I've learned to slow down, savor the small moments, and appreciate the beauty of everyday life. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and stress of our careers, but taking time for self-care, nourishment, and mindfulness is a practice that's too valuable to forget.

As we celebrate Love Week, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of Pura Vida. Take a moment to disconnect from the chaos and connect with yourself. Whether it's through yoga, meditation, nourishing food, or simply being present with your loved ones, make time for the things that fill your heart and soul.

Remember: True happiness comes not from what we achieve, but from how we live and love ourselves in the process.

Fearlessly Yours,

Abbey
